Christopher Cobley is a contemporary music composer based in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

The premiere of his latest work - found in the fractures (performed by woodwind quintet The City of Tomorrow) is available to listen here:

Originally from the United Kingdom, where he completed a BA in Music (with a Minor in Education) at the University of Southampton, Christopher has since emigrated to the American East Coast to continue his professional development.

His compositional interests include cognitive psychology, psychoacoustics, and developing nuanced forms of narrative communication through philosophical concepts of fragmentation and deconstructivism. Chris’ influences are eclectic, spanning a broad range of musical styles. However, a major impact on his artistic voice has been cross-disciplinary—including aspects of film, literature, and poetry. Studying and analyzing relevant works that reframe traditional convention, navigating contentious or complex topics whilst maintaining an essential level of accessibility and inclusivity.

Christopher completed an MFA in Music Composition from the Vermont College of Fine Arts in July ’23, where he was awarded the Center for Arts + Social Justice Thesis Fellowship Grant for work on the topic mental illness. He is currently in the process of doctoral applications after completion of an advanced 5th study semester in January ‘24. Over the course of his academic and artistic education, Chris has studied composition under the tutelage of Matthew Shlomowitz, John Mallia, Michael Early, and John Fitz Rogers.

“Something happens,
but by the time we notice,
it has begun without us.
Thus our access to the beginning is necessarily incomplete, fragmentary.”
